Eight rental-friendly changes that made our flat feel ours

Renting in Singapore can feel like living in someone else’s decisions — the tiles, the lights, the built-in wardrobe in a colour nobody chose. For a long time I treated our rental as temporary and so it always felt that way, half-furnished and a little sad. Then I gave myself one rule: nothing permanent, but everything intentional.

Peel-and-stick is doing a lot of quiet work in our home now. A removable backsplash film over the tired kitchen tiles, warm-toned bulbs swapped into every cold fixture, a large washable rug to hide a floor we don’t love. None of it touches the landlord’s property, all of it changes how the rooms feel at seven in the evening, which is the only time we’re really home.

The part nobody mentions is that rental-friendly doesn’t mean cheap and disposable. The rug, the lamps and the linen will move with us to the next place — they’re ours, not the flat’s. Spend on the things that follow you home; improvise on the things that stay behind. That single shift made the difference between camping and living.
