The Holland Village Study
A writer who works from home in Holland Village had a study that was all function and no soul — a desk, a chair, a wall of admin. She wanted a room that made her want to sit down and work, full of character and her own collected things, without losing the practicality a working day needs.
The brief
A home study that feels like a proper room with personality — layered, warm and full of the owner’s books and finds — while keeping it genuinely functional for long writing days and the occasional video call.
What we did
We leaned into her maximalist instincts in a controlled way. The wall of admin became a styled library — her books arranged by feel rather than alphabet, broken up with framed prints, small sculptures and a reading lamp with real warmth. The desk was turned to catch the daylight, and a vintage armchair gave the room a second place to think.
Layering is the craft here: a patterned rug grounds the room, textiles soften the hard desk lines, and a backdrop for video calls was composed so it looks considered on camera without being distracting. It’s busy in the best way — every object earns its place and tells you something about who works here. She says she now looks forward to her desk, which is the whole brief, met.
