The Novena Dining Nook
A couple who host often had an awkward, underused dining corner in their Novena condo — a too-big table marooned in a too-empty space. They wanted it to become the warm heart of the home, somewhere friends linger over a third bottle of wine. A focused styling project around the way they actually entertain.
The brief
Turn a cold, oversized dining area into an inviting mid-century nook that seats six comfortably and feels alive even when it’s just the two of them — warm wood, soft light and character, without buying a whole new dining set.
What we did
We kept their solid walnut table and built warmth around it. A pair of upholstered end-chairs softened the line-up, a low brass-and-glass pendant brought the light down to conversation height, and a long sideboard gave them a spot to land serving dishes and a styled display of glassware and ceramics. The corner finally has a centre of gravity.
Then the little touches that make a room feel cared for: a runner in rust linen, a fruit bowl that’s actually used, art that nods to mid-century without being a pastiche, and a dimmer so dinner can soften into evening. It’s the same table they’ve always had, in a room that now wants you to stay. Their words: “We host twice as often now.”
