What these lessons are like
Grade exams are a wonderful structure to grow inside — but only when the preparation is steady rather than a last-minute scramble. We plan backwards from the exam date so every part of the grade has its turn: the set pieces shaped musically, the scales and arpeggios drilled until they are automatic, sight-reading practised little and often, and the aural tests done so calmly that the exam feels familiar.
We enter students for ABRSM and Trinity, and we choose the board and the grade honestly — a student is entered when they are genuinely ready and will enjoy a good result, not to tick a box. Theory is woven in well ahead of time, so the Grade 5 theory requirement never becomes a roadblock to the higher practical grades.
Closer to the date we run a relaxed mock exam in the studio, so the room, the marking and the nerves are all rehearsed once before the real thing. Most of our exam students come out genuinely proud of the result — and, more importantly, still wanting to play afterwards.
