Car insurance questions

The things Singapore drivers ask us most — about premiums, cover types, NCD, workshops, claims and EVs. Still unsure? An adviser is a message away.

Your premium reflects the car (its value, make and age), the main driver (age band and driving record), your No-Claim Discount, the cover tier you pick and any add-ons. A near-new continental driven by a young driver with no NCD sits at the top of the range; a modest car driven by a 40-something with 50% NCD on third-party cover sits near the bottom. Our Premium Quote Estimator turns those inputs into an indicative annual figure in seconds, and an adviser confirms the exact price before anything is bound.
Third-Party Only is the legal minimum: it pays for injury and property damage you cause to other people, and nothing for your own car. Third-Party, Fire & Theft adds protection for your own car against fire and theft, but still not for accident damage to it. Comprehensive covers all of that plus accident damage to your own vehicle, windscreen, flood and more. As a rough guide: TPO suits an old runabout near COE expiry, TPFT a paid-off mid-aged car, and Comprehensive anything newer, financed or simply worth protecting.
Your No-Claim Discount (NCD) is a reward for claim-free years, rising in steps to a maximum of 50%. It is a real discount on your premium, so it is worth guarding. A single at-fault claim normally knocks it back down, which is where NCD Protector comes in: for a small extra premium it lets you make one at-fault claim without losing your discount. We will tell you honestly when a small claim is not worth your NCD, and when the Protector add-on earns its keep.
Both options exist. An authorised-workshop policy keeps your premium lower but routes repairs through the insurer’s approved panel. An any-workshop upgrade lets you repair at your own preferred or marque-specialist workshop for a modest extra premium — popular with continental and newer-car owners. We price both clearly so you can weigh the saving against the freedom; there is no single right answer, only the one that fits how you feel about your car.
Make the scene safe, switch on your hazard lights and check everyone is unhurt — call 995 if anyone is injured. Then call our 24h assistance line before moving anything you do not have to. We will talk you through photographing the damage, the other vehicle and the surroundings, exchanging particulars, and whether a police report is needed. Do not admit fault on the spot. We open the claim from the details you send and arrange the workshop and tow from there.
You can always deal with the insurer directly, but the reason most clients stay with us is that we handle the claim for them. We lodge it, arrange the workshop survey, chase the insurer for a fair settlement, and advise on the NCD impact at every step. It is the difference between a form you fill alone and a named adviser who has done it hundreds of times sitting on your side of the table.
Comprehensive policies typically include a personal-accident benefit for the driver, and you can extend cover for passengers and add medical-expenses benefits depending on the insurer. The exact limits vary by policy, so we set them out plainly when we quote rather than leaving them buried in the wording. If protecting yourself and your passengers matters to you, tell us and we will build a tier and add-ons around it.
Yes. We arrange cover for electric and hybrid cars across all three tiers, and we will flag the EV-specific points worth checking — battery cover terms, approved charging-related damage, and which workshops are equipped for your model. The premium reflects the car’s value and repair costs like any other, and the estimator handles EVs in the higher value bands. Tell us the model and we will quote it properly.
Whatever you give us for a quote — your contact, your car, your driving history — stays between DriveShield and the insurers we approach for you, kept to the rules set by the PDPA (Singapore’s data-protection law). We draw on it only to prepare and service your cover and to run any claim, never to push unrelated marketing at you, and it is never passed or sold to outside parties.
