Bunkmate started with a simple frustration. Our founder, Reza, grew up two streets from where the hostel now stands and spent his twenties backpacking — sleeping in dorms across four continents. Too many were the same: bunk beds crammed in for the count, a reception that clocked off at ten, and not a single soul who could tell you where the good, cheap food actually was.
So he came home to Kampong Glam and built the opposite. A small house of 32 beds, where the dorms stay small enough to make friends in, the reception never sleeps, and the people behind the desk genuinely live here and love showing it off. We kept the prices honestly backpacker — and put everything that should be included, in.
Today Bunkmate is run by a tiny team who live on site, lead the walking tours themselves, and remember your name by your second morning. We’re not a chain and we’re not a check-in counter. We’re the friend in Singapore you didn’t know you had yet.
Six honest reasons to stay
Backpacker prices, kept honest
Dorm beds from S$32 with everything included. No drip-fee surprises at the desk — the number you booked is the number you pay.
Small enough to make friends
A 32-bed house with eight-bunk dorms and a lounge that actually fills up. You meet people here without even trying.
The best corner of the city
Kampong Glam puts murals, hawker food and the MRT on your doorstep — walkable, photogenic and never boring.
Local experiences, run by locals
Walking tours, supper crawls and rooftop nights led by hosts who grew up here — not a clipboard activity, a genuine night out.
Safe and properly run
Keycard floors, lockers at every bed, a women-only dorm and a host on site around the clock. Sleep easy, in every sense.
Clean is not negotiable
Fresh linen on every changeover, bathrooms cleaned through the day and a kitchen you would actually want to cook in.
Meet your hosts
Reza Iskandar
Grew up two streets away in Kampong Glam and backpacked half the world before coming home to build the hostel he always wished he’d found on the road. Still leads the Saturday walking tour himself.
Mei Lin Goh
Keeps the place running, the linen fresh and the kitchen stocked — and somehow knows every guest’s name by their second morning. The reason Bunkmate feels looked-after.
Arjun Menon
On the desk through the small hours and out front of the hawker supper crawl. If you want to know where the good, cheap, late-night food is, ask Arjun.
